Admittedly anecdotal, I wrote this in response to someone's questions about Iguana body language and behavior.  While not a stead-fast rule by any means, these descriptions were made based on my own observations of Rex.

GO AWAY YOU SCARY HUMAN!

BODY LANGUAGE AND YOUR IGUANA

Hi Folks-

Remember that Iguanas are prey animals and because of that they fear everything. Being a fearful prey animal your best initial defense is to act tough and big and scary, which is what they are doing.

Some behavior basics:

Head-bob (up and down) = "I am here, can't you see me stupid human! I want you out of my territory!"

Shudder-bob (vibrating up and down motion) = "Now I'm really upset with you, you failed to recognize my space and I will bite you if you keep it up!"

Lateral Compression (puffing up) = "Look at me, I'm really upset now and I'm way too big for you to mess with, so just move along!"

Posturing stance (Lateral compressions with a lean) = "I'm really annoyed with you and I'm keeping a close eye on you. I'll lean into your presence to tell you that I'm may strike at you at any moment, so would you just go away and leave me alone now!"

Eye-close (closing one or both eyes) = "Since you have not listened to me so far, I'm just gonna close my eye(s) and pretend that you are no longer here. It helps my stress level."

Be very aware of the escalation of body language threats. You can "read" a lot about your Iguana from what they express in body language. Remember, having no vocalization, it is the only language they have.

Good luck with your green friends!

Dominick
